Later this year, America’s Central Port District will begin a project to extend its General Cargo Dock at the Granite City Harbor, thanks to a Port Infrastructure Development Grant from the United States Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration.
The project will include demolition of a defunct rail trestle north of the General Cargo Dock, construction of a new sheet pile wall, and backfill and compaction of the area behind the sheet pile wall to create a firm working surface. The project will also include drainage improvements and new removable safety rails. This will create nearly one half of an acre of additional laydown, truck access, and working surface to support the cargo dock operations. This extension of the General Cargo Dock results in a 1,210-foot-long dock capable of handling six barges at once.
The $4,550,000 project is supported by a $4,140,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration under the Port Infrastructure Development Program. The Port is excited to bring this investment to its local communities and continue on its mission of economic development and promoting multi-modal transportation.
We expect bids to be announced later this year. In the meantime, we recommend any interested parties to fill out our contractor registration form on our planroom page here.
