There is no doubt that a lot has changed “in the people and the place” called the Port since its creation in 1959. Its primary mission to create jobs and to facilitate business development through enhancement of the multi-modal transportation system, though, remains unchanged.
From its humble beginnings with two employees, no assets but one strong vision, to its 30 employees and a net worth in excess of $71 million today, the Port has quietly and steadily “stayed the course”. This is due in large part to the dedication of many individuals including primarily the 37 Board Commissioners who have steered the direction of the Port throughout the years. These positions have all been unpaid, and filled by local and civic-minded individuals
These Commissioners have convened well over 2,000 meetings, passed 140 Ordinances and over 2,100 Resolutions, and have spent tens of thousands of hours in determining the direction of this Port facility for the betterment of the area’s citizens. To their credit, over 70 companies now reside within the Port’s facilities, accounting for nearly 800 employees; quite an accomplishment that started just with a vision.
From Congressman Harris to Congressman Costello, senators, state and local legislators, Madison County Government officials and the mayors and local communities, the Port says “Thank You” for all you have done to support the Port throughout the years. You have our commitment that the Port will set sail on our next 50 years and continue on a heading for job creation and business attraction and development, to reach prosperity for our communities.
