America’s Central Port and Port of New Orleans Announce Marketing Agreement

Two Major Inland River Ports in the US Agree to Establish Marketing, Promotion and Other Relationships

New Orleans, LA:  Officials with America’s Central Port and the Port of New Orleans signed a new marketing agreement between the two ports during the annual Inland Rivers and Terminals Conference held in New Orleans last month. The agreement (which is attached) was formally approved at the Tri-City Port District Board meeting on Monday April 8, 2013.

The marketing agreement is a renewal of the relationship established between the two ports going back to 2003. According to Dennis Wilmsmeyer, Executive Director of America’s Central Port, “the agreement is premised on the strategic geography of the two ports. The Port of New Orleans is an entry point for the inland Mississippi river system and America’s Central Port functions as a gathering and distribution point for cargo routed through the Port of New Orleans”. Wilmsmeyer believes the widening of the Panama Canal, scheduled for completion in 2014, will bring new intermodal opportunities to the Port of New Orleans and to America’s Central Port.

Several members of the Tri-City Port Board of Commissioners, along with Wilmsmeyer, were on hand to sign the new agreement during the Conference. In signing the agreement, both ports agree to identify and facilitate commercial opportunities, utilizing the opportunity of the new Panama canal expansion and America’s Central Port’s, new South Harbor, currently under construction.  To implement this cooperative marketing effort, both ports agree to set aside funding for joint marketing and establish links on the two Port websites and share related information. The ports will also assign specific personnel to work on the joint marketing effort, as well as undertake an ongoing exchange of maritime market data and coordinate sales leads and joint visits with shippers, transportation users and partners.

This agreement comes on the heels of a Strategic Partnership Agreement signed between America’s central Port and the Wuhan New Port located on the Yangtze river in China. That agreement calls for similar marketing and strategic cooperation between the two ports.
